[Opening — Distant Drums, Tremolo Strings, Piano Like a Ticking Clock Spoken Female Narration]
“From the palace balcony, the Main Princess saw a procession gathering beyond the gates. Workers. Mothers. Merchants. Elders. And at the head of them all—
Her husband.
They carried no swords, no royal banners, no golden crown. Only signs demanding the right to choose who would sit upon the throne.”
MAIN PRINCESS — Sing Opera, Disbelieving:
“What has he done?”
[Movement I — Female Solo, Low Strings and Restrained Piano]
MAIN PRINCESS:
They come to my mother's palace
With demands upon the door.
After all the years we've guarded it,
They ask us to give more?
My mother built these walls with purpose,
Held this kingdom through the cold.
And now they march to claim the future
As if history can be sold!
[Movement II — Quickening Piano, Staccato Strings]
[Her sister enters, having seen the procession too. For once, neither woman has a cutting remark ready.]
SISTER — Female Solo:
You and I have fought like strangers,
Kept our grievances alive.
But the people at the gates now
Want the very throne we guard tonight.
I have hated you for years,
And you've given me your share.
But whatever stands between us,
We were raised by the same queen there.
[Movement III — Music Pauses, Cello and Solo Piano]
MAIN PRINCESS:
I thought you wanted what I had.
SISTER:
I thought you never cared.
MAIN PRINCESS:
Perhaps we both were keeping score
While something greater gathered there.
[They look toward the approaching crowd.]
SISTER:
I will not let them tear apart
The legacy our mother made.
MAIN PRINCESS:
And I will not surrender
Everything she gave.
[Movement IV — Full Orchestra, Driving Alt-R&B Rhythm]
MAIN PRINCESS — Female Solo:
We will not bow! We will not break!
We will not watch them take and take!
Let them demand, let them implore,
This house has stood through wars before!
SISTER — Female Solo:
We will stand! We will defend!
A royal line does not simply end!
Let every voice rise from the street—
The crown is not so easily beat!
[Overlapping Female Vocals — Separate Melodic Lines]
MAIN PRINCESS:
My mother's kingdom, my mother's name!
SISTER:
The house of Gold will remain the same!
MAIN PRINCESS:
We stand together, we hold the line!
SISTER:
This throne and legacy remain divine!
[Final Movement — Brass, Strings, Percussion, Layered Female Harmonies]
BOTH WOMEN — In Unison:
We will not bow! We will not yield!
We will defend this royal field!
The blood of Gold still runs within—
We will not let this dynasty end!
[Ending — Abrupt Orchestral Cut]
[The sisters stand shoulder to shoulder at the balcony. Below, the crowd's chants grow louder. The Main Princess recognizes her husband at the head of the procession. He looks up. Their eyes meet across the distance.]
MAIN PRINCESS — Spoken, Quietly:
So this is where you've chosen to stand.
[The crowd raises its signs. The sisters remain at the balcony, united but unyielding.]
[END OF NUMBER]
