Who Should I Be Now?

I used to be a friend to some of you

A girlfriend too, though I wasn’t very good

I thought I knew the things that I should do

But lately I’m not sure I ever could

I’ve been someone you could laugh beside

Someone learning how to stay

But now there are so many eyes on me

And I don’t know what they want me to say

Who should I be now?

The girl you came to see?

The voice you sing along with?

The version you believe?

Who should I be now?

When everybody knows my name

Do I stay exactly who I am

Or learn to play the game?

I know what I am to the ones I love

Or at least I think I’m learning still

But how can I be something to a crowd

When none of you can know me like they will?

Some of you just came to hear a song

Some might stay and some will go

And maybe that’s the part I have to learn

Being seen does not mean being known

Who should I be now?

The girl you came to see?

The voice you sing along with?

The version you believe?

Who should I be now?

When everybody knows my name

Do I stay exactly who I am

Or learn to play the game?

I don’t want to be a perfect face

I don’t want to fake a brighter smile

But if I change a little on the way

Does that mean I’ve lost myself somehow?

Maybe everybody feels this doubt

Maybe no one really figures it out

Maybe all I get to do

Is keep becoming something true

Who should I be now?

I still don’t have the words

I only know I’m standing here

And hoping to be heard

Who should I be now?

Maybe I don’t have to choose

Between the girl I’ve always been

And what I’m growing into

Who should I be now?

I guess I’ll find out somehow

But if you stay

And watch me change

I hope you’ll still see me

Somehow
