Willow // Fifteen Miles

She’s a redhead bluegrass Southern queen

your knees shake when you meet

baggy jeans, a quaint tattoo, artsy mascara that epitomizes every part of who

she is behind that gravel tone

that brings me to my knees

that woman kills me but to die is gaining more of what she sings

firecrack sultry and a penchant for dancing in rain

replacing all i’m tethered on

convincing me my bleedings not in vain

Boot to my neck she asked me

Honey do you love me back

i told her perfect love is fearful

you can never have enough of that

a fortnight later i was eye to eye

with her ex in the deep freeze of the garage

i asked her bout it she just said ‘cool heads prevail’ and carried on

it hurt to lose her but a heart that wild can never be free

two paid the price for every dream I had she wished to too conceive

there’s precious names I’ll never use now with an ex to mark their grave

so much for mason anthony, so much for ryleigh grace

i made an idol out of love

in pursuit of reigning in a wild

while tryna keep from losing all

my naiv’ty undefiled

the way you face is where you’ll drive

go all of fifteen miles

you better soon recalibrate

His Word’s more worth your while

it ain’t as spicy as what kid us ‘s calling love

but God and his good heart toward us

tastes better than twisted good intentioned sentiment ‘n’ unbridled lust

it’s in his spilled blood not mine that I trust
