One more crossing…

One more soul to bring home.

You turned to me and smiled.

I didn't know it was goodbye.

The doorway trembled beneath the strain,

Golden threads began to break.

You held the light against the dark,

With thirty-eight lives at stake.

I watched you guide the final one,

Beyond the threshold, out of sight.

Then something shattered underneath,

And pulled you from the light.

I reached for you across the fall,

Your name escaping through the storm.

For all the worlds I'd learned to hold,

I couldn't keep that doorway whole.
