[NARRATOR — theatrical adult male baritone, witty, articulate, dry comic timing] “And so the feast came to an end. The royals retired to their chambers, each convinced the throne would soon be theirs. But outside the granddaughter's window, a prince had other plans. No roses, no diamonds. Just a handful of pebbles.”
[SFX: TAP! TAP-TAP!]
[GRANDDAUGHTER — young female mezzo, whispered]
Who is it?
[PRINCE — young male tenor, playful whisper]
Your future!
[GRANDDAUGHTER] My future doesn't throw rocks at windows!
[PRINCE] Pebbles! There's a difference!
[ORCHESTRA: Mischievous waltz begins.]
[PRINCE — rhythmic, flirtatious patter]
Psst, Princess! Are you sleeping? Are you dreaming? Are you keeping All those royal rules tonight? Come along, let's take a flight!
[GRANDDAUGHTER — cautious, quick-witted]
Sneak outside? At half past ten? If they catch us, don't come back again!
[PRINCE] I'll take you shopping!
[GRANDDAUGHTER] Shopping? Now?
[PRINCE] I've a special shop. I'll show you how!
[DUET — playful Broadway counterpoint]
Is it old fashion? Is it new fashion? Must we do what generations did before? Is it old fashion? Or a new fashion? Maybe there's a world beyond the palace door!
[PRINCE] No gowns, no jewels, no golden rings. We're shopping for ideas, not expensive things!
[GRANDDAUGHTER] You princes are peculiar!
[PRINCE] And you princesses are bored!
[GRANDDAUGHTER] One hour!
[PRINCE] A generous reward!
[ORCHESTRA: They sneak into a moonlit field. The waltz shifts into syncopated strings and playful percussion.]
[GRANDDAUGHTER — softer, curious]
I've only seen this kingdom From a window dressed in gold. Who are all these people gathered With their lanterns in the cold?
[PRINCE — sincere, quietly]
They're discussing laws and power, Who should govern, who decides. They're imagining a kingdom Where the people's voices guide.
[GRANDDAUGHTER] Did the King invite them?
[PRINCE] No.
[GRANDDAUGHTER] Then why are they here?
[PRINCE] That's the question, dear.
[GRASSROOTS ENSEMBLE — mixed voices, whispered rhythmic counterpoint]
Who makes the laws? Who owns the land? Who gives the crown Its right to command?
Who chooses the rulers? Who answers the call? Does a kingdom belong To one family at all?
[GRANDDAUGHTER — thoughtful, not yet convinced]
If everybody builds it, Why must somebody wear it? If a kingdom has a people, Why should only royals share it?
[PRINCE] I never said you had to agree.
[GRANDDAUGHTER] I didn't say I did!
[ENSEMBLE: Quiet whispers and overlapping conversation build beneath the orchestra.]
[NARRATOR — over a delicate piano]“And so the princess went shopping. No dresses, no diamonds, no treasures to hold. She returned with nothing that gold could buy, but something far more difficult to control: a question.”
[GRANDDAUGHTER — softly]
Is it old fashion? Is it new fashion? Perhaps there's more to Gold than the gold inside these walls.
[ORCHESTRA: A mysterious unresolved chord. Blackout.]
[END]
