[Female lead, Broadway play, Sondheim influenced orchestra, A warm piano, r&b alt rhapsody transitions, brushed drums, bass, and lush strings. expressive vocal dynamics, and a sophisticated Black musical sensibility.]
*Spoken*
“Twenty years later. Morning sunlight. The Princess, now a grown woman, stands before her mirror.”
*PRINCESS (singing)*
Well, look at me, look at me,
Twenty years beneath the sun.
Still a little bit of springtime,
Still a little mischief left to run.
They say the roses lose their color,
They say the petals have to fall,
But my skin's been drinking sunshine—
I don't see winter here at all!
Black don't crack, or so they tell me,
Melanin will see me through.
I see a wrinkle in the mirror,
Everybody says, "Where? Who?"
Maybe time has been too gentle,
Maybe age has lost its track.
I've been blooming all these years,
And baby, black don't crack!
[Her grown daughter enters, preparing for school or university. The music shifts into a playful mother-daughter duet.]
*PRINCESS*
Now, daughter, hear your mother's wishes,
Let me put them in a rhyme.
Once they wanted us a crown,
Now a degree will serve you fine!
Your father worked his hands to nothing,
Built a future you can claim.
You needn't marry into riches
Just to put yourself to name.
Everything you need is in the garden,
Every seed and every truth.
But why go searching in the field
When a classroom waits for you?
Not in that order, child, not in that order—
First your mind, then choose your road.
You don't need a prince to crown you,
You can carry your own gold!
*DAUGHTER higher register singing*
But Mama, what if books can't teach me
Everything the world will do?
*PRINCESS*
Hush-
“You’re going off to college and I don’t want to hear anymore about it”!
[The orchestra swells into a warm reprise of the garden theme. The Princess studies her reflection again.]
*PRINCESS*
Twenty springs have come and found me,
Twenty summers kissed my face.
I've made a home, held a man, I've raised a daughter,
I've learned to bloom in my own place.
And if a silver hair should find me,
If the years should leave their track,
I'll just smile and tell the mirror—
Black don't crack!
[A knock. A royal messenger appears with a sealed letter. The music stops.]
*MESSENGER Speaks*
“Your Highness. A summons from the palace.
The Queen is dying hurry hurry.”
[Silence. The Princess looks back into the mirror. For the first time, she sees not a wrinkle, but the years. The opening piano motif returns, slower now.]
*PRINCESS (softly sings)*
Oh.
So black can crack.
In springtime…
I’ll take everything I said back.
What’s gonna happen now…
Oh.
So black can crack.
In springtime…
I’ll take everything I said back.
What’s gonna happen now…
Winter is coming,
Oh no,
The first signs of flurries,
Winter is coming,
Oh no,
The first signs of flurries,
Mother…I’m on my way.
