I Don’t Love You

You said it like you’d held it in

For longer than I ever knew

And for a second I just stood there

Trying to find the right thing to do

’Cause you’ve been good to me

Better than good, if I’m being fair

You never made me second-guess

If I was wanted there

And maybe that’s what makes this hard

There’s nothing here that I can blame

No broken promise, no hidden part

No villain I can name

I don’t love you

God, I wish I did

It would make this so much easier

If my heart worked like it should

You gave me every reason

To want this to be true

And I hate that all I have to give you

Is “I don’t love you”

You’re everything they’d probably say

I should be lucky enough to find

Steady hands and honest words

Someone gentle, someone kind

And I kept waiting for the spark

Thinking maybe I was slow

Maybe feelings take their time

Maybe someday I would know

But wanting to want you

Isn’t wanting you enough

And pretending this is something more

Wouldn’t make it love

I don’t love you

God, I wish I did

It would make this so much easier

If my heart worked like it should

You gave me every reason

To want this to be true

And I hate that all I have to give you

Is “I don’t love you”

Please don’t turn this into

Something wrong with you

There isn’t something missing

There’s nothing you could do

And maybe somewhere out there

Someone hears the things you said

And feels the whole world open

The way mine simply never did

I wish that girl was me

I really do

But I don’t love you

And I won’t lie to you

You deserve a heart that answers

When yours says “I choose you”

I could stay because you’re perfect

I could try to see it through

But that would only hurt you slower

And I care too much to do that to you

So I don’t love you

Though I wish I did

And I hope someday

That won’t hurt quite like this
