[MOVEMENT I — SPRINGTIME WALTZ]
[Female lead, warm and playful; lilting strings, harp, celesta]
The morning ties its ribbons
Round the windows of our room.
There's a little pot of honey
And the apple trees in bloom.
You come laughing through the doorway
With the flowers that you stole.
There's a little mud upon your collar
And a kingdom in your soul.
You call me by my given name.
I call you home again.
Let the palace keep its silver;
We have sunlight, we have rain.
Oh, the springtime in our little house,
The roses on the wall.
If this is all the wealth we ever have,
My love, we have it all.
[MOVEMENT II — THE SPELL]
[Minor-key orchestra, ominous cello, fluttering flute, mysterious wordless female vocal]
Somewhere in the forest,
Someone whispers to the night.
A shadow wears a woman's face.
A candle loses light.
A stranger's song surrounds you.
A strange dream clouds your eyes.
And something steals the melody
That once made our hearts harmonize.
[MOVEMENT III — WHAT THE WINDOW SAW]
[Waltz slows; uneasy strings, trembling piano; intimate, increasingly distressed lead]
I brought you home the sweetest pears.
I saved the yellow ribbon.
I thought I'd find you waiting
Where the afternoon had fallen.
But there's a woman by the orchard,
And your hand is holding hers.
And the song I hear you singing
Is the song I thought was ours.
No... perhaps the light has fooled me.
Perhaps I saw it wrong.
Perhaps the heart can hear a lie
Before the eyes are strong.
Tell me, darling...
What have I seen?
[MOVEMENT IV — THE HOUSE WITH TWO SHADOWS]
[Sparse cello, deep Rhodes, aching alternative soul; breathy lead vocal]
You look at me as though you're dreaming.
You say you don't know why you're there.
But how can I believe your silence
When I saw another in your care?
I gave you every springtime.
I gave you every key.
Now there's a stranger in our garden
And a stranger here in me.
Where did our springtime go?
Who put this winter here?
Where did our springtime go?
Who put this winter here?
Where did our springtime go?
Who put this winter here?
I cannot sleep beside a question.
I cannot kiss a half-known face.
If love is still inside this house,
Why does it feel like an empty place?
[MOVEMENT V — THE LAST ROSE OF SPRING]
[Fragile celesta, returning waltz, distant wordless harmonies, unresolved orchestral ending]
The roses on the windowsill
Are opening without me.
The kettle sings its little song.
The house remembers softly.
My king...
My home...
My ordinary miracle...
Was I a fool to call you mine?
Was I a fool to trust?
My king...
My home...
My ordinary miracle...
Somewhere in the orchard,
Where the last light disappears,
A woman hums a little tune
That sounds too much like tears.
Tell me, springtime...
Was it ever really ours?
[ENDING — The opening waltz returns, broken and incomplete. One dissonant chord. Silence.]
