Ghosts of Yesterday

They remember my name…

But something still feels wrong.

Like somebody rewrote the ending,

And forgot where I belong.

Everybody’s smiling, everybody’s home,

But I still hear whispers when I’m alone.

Pictures came back, every face in place,

But I see another me in the empty space.

Same old streets, same familiar skies,

Different kind of darkness behind my eyes.

I got my life back, so why can’t I sleep?

Why’s yesterday calling from six feet deep?

Something’s moving underneath my skin,

Like a war I never fought is starting again.

I hear my voice from the other side,

Saying, “You can’t bury what you left behind!”

GO! GO! Ghosts of yesterday!

Why won’t you let my memories fade?

NO! NO! I won’t run away!

I’m not the man that you used to chase!

Burn those shadows, break those chains,

I won’t surrender to yesterday!

GO! GO! Let the darkness say,

I’m still alive, ghosts of yesterday!

Saw my reflection turn before I did,

Saw a crooked smile that my mirror hid.

He said, “You got everything you wanted back,

But you left me stranded where the world went black.”

Now the lights flicker every time I blink,

And I hear old voices every time I think.

Maybe when the whole world erased my name,

Something took my place and learned my pain.

I remember everything!

But do I remember me?

If that shadow wears my face,

Which one of us is free?

GO! GO! Ghosts of yesterday!

You can’t drag my soul into the grave!

NO! NO! I won’t run away!

I’ll face whatever’s wearing my name!

The mirror cracked…

But my reflection kept smiling.
