My thoughts stand still: a stream not flowing
to spring’s delights, my longing growing
delayed beyond all reason
suspended for the season.
I’m smitten by that soul-crushing smile
that turns back my steps within a mile.
How much longer shall we wait?
Till we’re old, and it’s too late?
Disarming me with lovesome laughter!
What is the ease we’re striving after?
Must another long detour
keep us waiting ‘till we’re sure?
Why must our masks succumb to decay?
How can mere coins be worth more delay?
The sands of time shall not stay,
The jarring clock speeds each day.
