Style: Haunting Indie-Folk / Cinematic Pop (Dark, atmospheric, and told from a child's perspective)
(Verse 1)
I adjust my witch’s hat in the hallway mirror
While the shadows around me grow taller and nearer
The neighborhood kids are all counting their sweets
Laughing and running down the cobblestone streets
They think that the monsters are made out of plastic
But the things in my bedroom are much more fantastic
A boy from the twenties sits on my rug
Rolls a spectral marble, and gives me a shrug.
(Chorus)
Oh, if they only knew what walks through the door
The history dancing right over the floor
They’re trick-or-treating out under the sky
While I watch the world with a Halloween eye
A heavy dark secret tucked into my hood
If they only knew what goes on in this woods.
(Verse 2)
By seven o'clock, the veil starts to tear
The cold air is crowded with ghosts in the square
I hold my mom's hand as we walk past the park
Stepping through soldiers who died in the dark
A pioneer lady is crying near the swing
While the living kids shout and the doorbells all ring
I hide in my costume, I try not to stare
At the centuries of people who are standing right there.
(Bridge)
They ask why I’m quiet, they think that I'm shy
But I’m counting the phantoms that just floated by
My house is a ballroom of secrets and sighs
Locked in the stare of a hundred dead eyes
I blow out the candle in my jack-o'-lantern light
And wish them all a silent, ghostly goodnight.
(Outro)
Happy Halloween to the crowd on the street...
You don't see the spirits you're about to meet.
Yeah, if you only knew.
I'm just a kid on the porch...
But they’re watching you, too.
