Everybody's Soldier

They say my strength is that I never quit…

But my weakness?

I never know when to stop fighting.

I’ve been everybody’s soldier…

But who’s fighting for me?

I was raised to stand tall when the world fell down,

Learned to hide all my tears when nobody’s around.

Put a smile on my face, kept the pain underneath,

Built a heart full of love with a war underneath.

I chased childhood dreams, put my boots on the ground,

Wore the flag on my shoulder, made my family proud.

But the strongest of soldiers still bleed in the rain,

And a uniform can’t make a man immune to pain.

I’ve been somebody’s shelter, somebody’s light,

Held the world on my shoulders through the darkest nights.

But somewhere in the fight, I forgot about me,

Too busy saving others to admit I couldn’t breathe.

They see the armor, never see the scars,

See the soldier, never see the heart.

I can fight a thousand battles, make it through the storm,

But who’s gonna hold me when my strength is gone?

I’m everybody’s soldier, everybody’s shield,

Taking every bullet, hiding what I feel.

I can carry all their pain, but who’s carrying mine?

I’m always saving everybody, running out of time.

I’m stronger than the thunder, but I break inside,

Got a warrior’s heart and tears I hide.

If my greatest strength is never letting go,

My greatest weakness is fighting all alone.

I’ve got a son who looks at me like I could never fall,

So I try to be a hero standing ten feet tall.

Got a family that I love, got a heart that won’t bend,

But I’m learning even heroes need a hand from a friend.

I’ve lost people I loved, kept their names in my chest,

Every goodbye left a weight I couldn’t lay to rest.

I’ve seen dreams turn to questions, watched my body heal,

Had to learn that slowing down doesn’t make me less real.

I’m scared of disappointing people counting on my name,

So I swallow all my worries, keep on pushing through the pain.

But maybe being strong ain’t always standing on my feet,

Maybe strength is saying, “I need somebody here with me.”

I DON’T WANNA BE INVINCIBLE!

I JUST WANNA FEEL ALIVE!

I DON’T NEED ANOTHER BATTLE!

I JUST NEED SOME PEACE TONIGHT!

Let the armor hit the floor,

I can’t carry anymore.

If I’m worth the love I give,

Then I deserve a chance to live!

I’m everybody’s soldier, but I’m human too,

Got a heart that keeps on fighting even when it’s bruised.

I can still protect the people that I love so deep,

Without sacrificing every little piece of me.

I’m stronger than the thunder, but I don’t have to hide,

I can let somebody stand here fighting by my side.

My greatest strength is the love I won’t let go,

My greatest lesson?

I DON’T HAVE TO FIGHT ALONE!

I spent my whole life being somebody’s shield…

Maybe it’s time…

To let somebody protect me.
