[SCENE INTRO — SPOKEN NARRATION]
[Male Broadway Play Narrator] “The grand hall of the Kingdom of Gold glows beneath golden chandeliers. Servants clear the final dishes while neighboring royals settle into their seats. At the head of the hall rests the empty throne. The Queen is dead, her ceremonies are over. One royal asked, Well, let's hear it. Who will be the next line of Gold to take the throne? Then Sister rises beside her wealthy husband. Across the hall, the Main Princess stands with her laborer husband and their young adult daughter. The wealthy husband adjusts his gold rings and steps forward and the play continues.”
[INTRO — DELICATE STRINGS, HARPSICHORD, ELEGANT WALTZ]
*WEALTHY HUSBAND sings*: A kingdom is a delicate thing,
A clock that must be wound.
A thousand hands may build a wall,
But one must keep it sound.
A field may yield a thousand grains,
A river may run free,
But what is gold without a hand
To guard its legacy?
[MOVEMENT I — CHARMING, REFINED, GENTLE WOODWINDS]
I've seen a hundred houses rise,
I've watched a hundred fall.
For dreams are lovely things, my friends,
But dreams don't roof a hall.
A promise cannot pave a road,
Good wishes cannot build.
A kingdom needs a steady hand,
A treasury well-filled.
[MOVEMENT II — STRINGS SWELL, HORNS ENTER]
A kingdom in good hands,
A future bright and clear,
A house that stands for centuries,
A throne without a fear.
For wealth is not a sin, my friends,
Ambition is not vain.
The strongest roots beneath a tree
Are those that can sustain.
We cannot hand the keys away
Because a heart is kind.
The crown demands a certain gift,
A disciplined mind!
[ENSEMBLE — NEIGHBORING ROYALS JOIN] A kingdom in good hands! A future bright and clear!
*WEALTHY HUSBAND*: A kingdom must be more than loved. It must be engineered!
[MOVEMENT III — GRAND ORCHESTRAL WALTZ, FULL BRASS]
Consider what our fathers and mothers built,
The fortunes they preserved,
The borders that they carefully kept,
The order Gold deserved.
And I, for one, would gladly serve
Where duty calls my name.
For what is all this gold worth
If we cannot guard its flame?
Let others speak of what has been,
Of sacrifices made.
I'll speak of what a kingdom is
When properly conveyed!
[FINALE — FULL ORCHESTRA]
*WEALTHY HUSBAND*: Let Gold enjoy a golden age,
A future rich and grand. And should the family call on me—
[He extends his hand toward the empty throne.]
I'll place Gold in good hands!
*ENSEMBLE*: A KINGDOM IN GOOD HANDS!
[A magnificent final chord. The neighboring royals applaud. The wealthy husband bows, accepting their approval.]
[CODA — MUSIC FADES TO A SINGLE CELLOThe Main Princess's husband looks down at his rough, hardworking hands. The wealthy husband catches his eye and offers a courteous nod.]
*MAIN PRINCESS, quietly*: “You know he was speaking about the crown. Not you.”
*HUSBAND*: “Doesn't matter what he was speaking about. You heard them.”
*HUSBAND*: “They heard a king.”
