I Found Me

When you closed that door behind you

I told myself we’d be alright

Said maybe this was for the better

Maybe we’d been losing us for quite some time

But when the noise was finally over

And there was nothing left to fight

The silence hit me like an ocean

And I disappeared into the night

I thought I’d lost my future

When I watched you leave my past

I didn’t know that letting go

Would lead me home at last

‘Cause I thought I’d never get over you

Thought I’d always feel this way

Thought the life that we had built together

Was the best I’d ever make

I was terrified of being lonely

Of waking up with no one next to me

But somewhere through the breaking

Something changed inside of me

For the first time I don’t need somebody

To tell me who I’m supposed to be

I thought that I had lost you

But somewhere along the way

I found me

There’ve been mornings I felt stronger

There’ve been nights I’ve fallen back

Days I’ve missed the way you held me

Days I wouldn’t take you back

I’ve chased answers through the memories

I’ve wondered where it all went wrong

But every mile I’ve walked without you

I’ve learned that I can walk alone

And I don’t hate the man I was then

He was doing what he knew

But I’m starting to become the man

I always wanted to

I thought I’d never get over you

Thought I’d always feel this way

Thought I’d spend my life comparing

Everyone to yesterday

I was terrified of being lonely

Like alone meant incomplete

Now the quiet doesn’t scare me

There’s a strength inside that peace

For the first time I don’t need somebody

To tell me who I’m supposed to be

I thought that I had lost you

But somewhere along the way

I found me

Maybe someday I’ll love somebody

Maybe someone walks beside me again

But I won’t need her there to save me

I won’t disappear inside her hands

And if nobody comes tomorrow

I’ve still got a life I want to lead

’Cause happiness was never someone

Standing next to me

I thought I’d never get over you

Now look how far I’ve come

I’m not pretending it stopped hurting

I’m just not scared of what I’ve become

There are still days I miss the old life

Still moments that can bring me to my knees

But I’m building something stronger

And this time it’s built on me

I don’t need somebody to complete me

I don’t need another half to make me whole

You leaving felt like losing everything

But somehow losing you

Led me home

I thought I’d never get over you

Maybe part of me never has to

I can love what we once were

And still let it be

I thought I lost my whole world

When you walked away from me

But somewhere in the silence…

I found me.
