Taking Back My Name

You left your coffee by the window

A little ring upon the wood

I read the note beside it twice

It said you knew I would

I took the long way past the river

With your old jacket on my back

Every corner held a question

Every answer led me back

But I am done with waiting

For a door you never close

I can feel the morning changing

In the way my heartbeat goes

I’m taking back my name tonight

Writing it in bigger lines

No more running after maybe

No more making wrong feel right

I’ve got a fire in my chest

And I’m finally catching breath

If you see me, wave goodbye

I’m taking back my name tonight

Your picture’s face-down in the drawer now

Not a wound, just something old

I found a dress I never wore

And put it on in gold

My friends are waiting at the corner

With a table in the sun

They said, “You’ve got a life to live”

So I said, “Watch me run”

I am done with waiting

For a sign beneath the door

I can hear the future calling

And I’m not afraid anymore

I’m taking back my name tonight

Writing it in bigger lines

No more running after maybe

No more making wrong feel right

I’ve got a fire in my chest

And I’m finally catching breath

If you see me, wave goodbye

I’m taking back my name tonight

I gave you every quiet minute

Every truth I couldn’t hide

Now I’m giving one to myself

And I’m stepping outside

I’m taking back my name tonight

Turning all the wrongs to signs

No more running after maybe

No more making small feel right

I’ve got a fire in my chest

And I’m finally catching breath

If you see me, wave goodbye

I’m taking back my name tonight

Taking back my name

Taking back my time

I was waiting for a sunrise

Now the morning’s mine
