In Order

I was formed to need a covering,

A place to rest my head,

But I blurred the lines You gave me, Lord,

And leaned where You had said—

No man can be the source of peace,

No arms can make me whole,

What I was reaching for in him

Was the quiet of my soul.

You said, Seek first the Kingdom,

And everything will fall in line

So I’m putting You in order, Lord,

Above my wants, above my fear,

I love my husband faithfully

But You alone draw near.

He’s my partner, not my portion,

My companion, not my cure,

You are my daily bread, my God,

The only love that’s sure.

I asked him for what You provide,

Security and rest,

I mistook affection for the peace

That only comes from Christ.

But Your Word says I am held by You,

Complete and fully known,

Before I ever became a wife

I was already Your own.

You are the vine, the life, the way,

Apart from You I fade away

So I’m putting You in order, Lord,

Above my needs, above my name,

I love my husband with my heart

But You remain the flame.

He’s a blessing, not a burden,

Not the weight I’m meant to bear,

You are my refuge, strength, and help,

The answer to my prayer.

You said no idol stands before You,

Not even love that feels so right,

If I lose You trying to hold him close

I’ve misunderstood the fight.

Teach me how to love him rightly

With a heart that’s not afraid,

Because when I’m filled by You alone

I don’t have to beg or ache.

So I’m putting You in order, Lord,

First in love and first in place,

He’s my partner, not my portion,

My companion, not my cure.

When I seek You above all else

I can love him free and whole

You are my portion, my inheritance,

The keeper of my soul.

Whom have I in Heaven but You?

And on this earth—nothing else will do.
