Lyrics
[Verse 1 — Female, barely above a whisper]
I don't remember when I disappeared,
Was it somewhere in the silence?
Was it somewhere in the fear?
I've been staring at a stranger
With my mother's tired eyes,
And she wears my face so perfectly,
But God, I know she lies.
I used to sing without a reason,
I used to dance without a drink.
Now I measure out my happiness
By how little I can think.
[Verse 2 — Male, low, aching, conversational]
I watched you turn your suffering
Into something you could hold.
You made a home inside the darkness
'Cause the daylight felt too cold.
And everybody calls you strong
For the battles you've survived,
But nobody ever asks you
What it costs to stay alive.
[Pre-Chorus — Female, voice trembling]
And I'm tired of being brave,
I'm tired of being kind.
I'm tired of saying "I'm okay"
When I'm losing my own mind.
[Chorus — Both, explosive, soulful]
I WAS HERE BEFORE THE HURT!
Before the world broke through my skin!
Before I learned to call it living
When I was only giving in!
And I don't need another savior,
I don't need another scar!
I JUST WANT TO FIND THE WOMAN
THAT I WAS BEFORE THE DARK!
And if she's buried in the wreckage,
If she's hiding in the dirt,
I'll dig until my fingers bleed—
I WAS HERE BEFORE THE HURT!
[Verse 3 — Female, raw, building anger]
Don't you dare call me a warrior
Like I chose to go to war.
Don't you paint my pain in gold
And tell me what it's for.
I never asked for all these lessons,
Never begged to be this tough.
I was just a girl who needed love,
And somehow that was asking too much.
[Bridge — Spoken dialogue, escalating]
Male: What if the girl you were is gone?
Female: Then tell me why I hear her song.
Male: What if the pieces never fit?
Female: Then I'll make something new from it.
Male: What if you're afraid to try?
Female: Then I'll be afraid and still survive.
Male: What if you break beneath the weight?
Female: THEN LET ME BREAK! JUST LET ME BREAK!
[Guitar drops out. Silence. One shaking breath.]
Female — whispered:
But don't mistake the way I shake
For proof that I can't stand.
[Final Chorus — Both, full force, soaring harmonies]
I WAS HERE BEFORE THE HURT!
Before the world broke through my skin!
Before I learned to call it living
When I was only giving in!
And I don't need another savior,
I don't need another scar!
I DON'T HAVE TO BE THE WOMAN
THAT I WAS BEFORE THE DARK!
'Cause maybe I'm not buried,
Maybe I'm just learning how to rise.
Maybe all these broken pieces
Are still worthy of a life!
[Outro — Female, trembling, almost crying]
I thought I had to find her...
The girl I used to be.
But maybe she was waiting...
For me to become me.
[A single cello note fades into silence.]
