Lyrics

[Verse 1; immediate rap, 150 BPM halftime; muted guitar, tight hi-hats; no piano]

You heard one word slip, missed the whole confession,

Graded my language, ignored my depression.

Said a ring stays on no matter what happens,

Like a broken home heals if nobody unfastens.

Got a rule for the bottle, a rule for the bedroom,

An answer prepared before anybody lets you

Hear what they lived through, hear what it cost;

You can win that debate and still leave someone lost.

[Build; quicker flow, rising bass, opening hi-hats]

You say I should suffer, I should have less,

Shouldn’t feel peace with this weight on my chest.

But look what I built, look who I became,

Still got a prayer underneath my mistakes.

Not saying a full plate proves that I’m right,

But you can’t call me godless by looking outside.

If your version of heaven needs me on the floor,

I’m done making myself small enough for your—

[On “DOOR”: crash, full 808 and guitar slam; double-time drums]

DOOR!

[Chorus; rapid-fire first four lines, soulful belt last four]

I make a bad God seem real—by your rules, by your scale,

But look what I have and today how I feel.

You say I’m a sinner, say I don’t belong—

Then why do I feel Him when everything’s wrong?

If I make your picture fall,

Maybe it was drawn too small.

I won’t trade the peace I feel

For a version you can sell.

[Verse 2; fast syncopated rap, rolling hi-hats]

Funny, the one whose voice could drown out the crowd

Called it a chain when I felt their clouds.

I said, “Your weather moves under my skin.”

You said, “You lose yourself letting it in.”

Codependent or empath—two names for the rain;

Same window, two people explaining the pain.

You call it a tether, I call it a nerve;

Does feeling your hurt mean forgetting my worth?

Maybe I read storms, maybe I chase thunder,

Maybe I reach in too far and go under.

But you don’t get the final word on my heart,

Like a pulpit don’t own every light in the dark.

You can tell me your faith, you can tell me your story;

Don’t mistake my attention for handing you authority.

I can walk out the doors without walking from God;

You don’t get to grade every road that I walk.

[Bridge; halftime, gritty soul; bass pulse, sparse guitar]

Maybe I bend His face toward mine,

Make Him agree when I cross that line.

I’m not above what I’m asking you—

Leave some room for a different truth.

I don’t need Him to hate your side.

I need somewhere I don’t have to hide.

[Final chorus; explosive drums, rapid rap into full belt]

I make a bad God seem real—by your rules, by your scale,

But look what I have and today how I feel.

You say I’m a sinner, say I don’t belong—

Then why do I feel Him when everything’s wrong?

If I make your picture fall,

Maybe it was drawn too small.

I didn’t turn my back on God—

I turned when you blocked the door.
