Silent Night, With a Wink

Snow on the porch, your red scarf on my chair

You said, “Be home by ten,” then you left me standing there

I brought a little mistletoe, you brought your cousin’s band

Now every auntie’s clapping while you pull me by the hand

The cocoa’s getting cold, but the room is turning warm

You grin and say, “One dance,” as the whole house joins the storm

Silent night, but the hallway’s alive

Your boots keep time and the cousins all slide

Hush now, darling, don’t wake the old man

We’ll sway by the tree till the bells say we can

Silent night, with a wink in your eye

You stole my last cookie, so this dance is your fine

The lights blink out, the kitchen’s candle-bright

Your brother finds a shaker and your grandma gets it right

We trade the fancy carols for a tune we both can sway

You spin me past the stockings, then you laugh and look away

The cocoa’s getting cold, but the room is turning warm

You grin and say, “One dance,” as the whole house joins the storm

Silent night, but the hallway’s alive

Your boots keep time and the cousins all slide

Hush now, darling, don’t wake the old man

We’ll sway by the tree till the bells say we can

Silent night, with a wink in your eye

You stole my last cookie, so this dance is your fine

If the morning brings the dishes, let them wait beside the sink

You can keep the little ribbon that you tied around my drink

One more turn beneath the tinsel, one more laugh before we part

You came to borrow sugar; now you’ve borrowed half my heart

Silent night, but the hallway’s alive

Your boots keep time and the cousins all slide

Hush now, darling, don’t wake the old man

We’ll sway by the tree till the bells say we can

Silent night, with a wink in your eye

You stole my last cookie—come back next July

One last turn, then we’ll say goodnight

Keep that red scarf here till next silent night
