Me Against My Reflection

Look in the mirror… who the hell is that?

Same face, same scars, but I don’t recognize the man.

One of us is drowning…

The other’s reaching for his hand.

Look at you, smiling like you’re doing fine,

Everybody sees the strength, never sees the fight.

You wear that uniform, act like you’re made of steel,

But tell me, little soldier, how you really feel?

You been carrying the weight of a thousand storms,

Trying to keep everybody else safe and warm.

You save everybody, but who’s saving you?

You preach about the light while you’re breaking in two.

Yeah, I know I’m broken, got cracks in my soul,

But a cracked foundation doesn’t mean I can’t grow.

I got people who love me, got a son looking up,

Got a family that stayed when the road got rough.

I’ve been knocked to my knees, still found my feet,

Lost a couple battles, but I won’t accept defeat.

You can call me weak, you can laugh at my scars,

But the darkest nights still got beautiful stars.

It’s me against my reflection!

Fighting shadows in my head!

One side screaming, “Just surrender!”

Other says, “You’re not done yet!”

Mirror, mirror, tell me why,

I see a stranger in my eyes.

One wants peace, one wants war,

But I ain’t losing me no more!

Dark: You ain’t enough, never have been!

Real: Then why the hell am I standing again?

Dark: You’re just a failure dressed in pride!

Real: I’m still alive, that’s proof I tried!

Dark: They’ll walk away when they see your pain!

Real: The real ones stayed through the pouring rain!

Dark: You’re getting tired, just let me win!

Real: Nah, I’m the one who’s living in this skin!

Maybe I’m not who I thought I’d be,

Maybe healing means forgiving me.

I don’t need perfection, don’t need applause,

Just a little peace with all my flaws.

It’s me against my reflection!

See that fire behind my eyes!

Dark: You’ll never get rid of me…

Real: I don’t have to.

But you don’t get to write the ending.
