What Do People Do for Fun?

He said I should find something

Something new to fill my days

Apparently just sitting there

And thinking isn’t always great

So I made a little list

Of things that people seem to do

When nobody is asking them

And nothing needs them to

No job to finish

No place to run

No reason for it…

Except it’s fun?

No goal, no prize, no reason why

You just decide to waste some time

There must be something, everyone!

Something pointless, something mine

Something I would choose to do

Just because I like it too

Maybe I could take up running

People seem to do that lots

But if I’m not going somewhere

Why not simply… stop?

Maybe painting! That looks peaceful

Colors, brushes, empty space

I was aiming for a flower

That’s… a surprisingly angry face

Gardening?

You plant a seed

Give it water

Pull the weeds

Then you wait and wait and wait…

Maybe not. Next candidate!

There are thousands I could try

How do humans ever choose

What they like to waste time on?

Cooking could be interesting

I can eat, I just don’t need to

Which makes cake unnecessary…

So obviously, I should make two

Photography? Knitting? Dancing?

Puzzles? Games? Collecting things?

Learning every constellation?

Making tiny paper wings?

I could read about a subject

No one ever asked me to

I could learn to play the trumpet…

Actually, let’s not do that too

Wait…

Maybe that’s the point of hobbies

They’re not meant to lead somewhere

You don’t have to prove they’re useful

You don’t need a reason there

Maybe wasting time isn’t wasting

If I wanted it that way

Maybe choosing something pointless

Is still choosing how I spend my day

…Oh.

That’s actually kind of nice.
