Lyrics
[verse 1]
Dusk runs gold along the rim,
Lantern breath grows low and dim.
On my tongue a quiet flare,
Honey, ash, and orchard air.
Everything we saved tonight
Settles soft as second sight—
In the throat a warm reply,
Summer kept beneath the sky.
[pre-chorus]
Close your eyes and count the sweet;
Let the dark fall at your feet.
[chorus]
Aftertaste of light—
Sweet and small but bright,
Clinging to the mouth of night
Like a promise held too tight.
Aftertaste of light—
Carry what is right;
What we could not keep in day
Learns to bloom another way.
[verse 2]
Hands are stained with work and rain,
Sugar threaded through the pain.
Bitter taught the tongue to know
How to make the softer glow.
Every wound we turned to bread,
Every name we watered, fed—
Now the quiet, slow and kind,
Lingers where the shadows wind.
[pre-chorus]
Close your eyes and count the sweet;
Let the dark fall at your feet.
[chorus]
Aftertaste of light—
Sweet and small but bright,
Clinging to the mouth of night
Like a promise held too tight.
Aftertaste of light—
Carry what is right;
What we could not keep in day
Learns to bloom another way.
[polyphonic start 02:08 / end 02:32 / bpm 96 / 4:4]
[Voice A 02:08–02:32] Hold the light—let it stay.
[Voice B 02:12–02:28] Honey/ash upon the tongue.
[Voice C 02:16–02:24] Breathe it in—give it back.
[Voice D 02:20–02:32] We are seeds returning.
[bridge]
If the night asks who we are,
Point to every working scar.
If the dark demands a toll,
Answer with a brighter soul.
[final chorus]
Aftertaste of light—
Sweet and small but bright,
Clinging to the mouth of night
Like a vow that learned to fight.
Aftertaste of light—
Carry it through night;
What we planted, what we earned—
Comes back warm, and so we turn.
